In short
A personal notetaker is not a Gong alternative for a sales organisation. Gong records a team's calls, maps them to the CRM and forecasts deals. If you are one person who wants call notes without a bot or uploaded audio, a notetaker like Notey does that job, and nothing more.
Gong and a personal notetaker do different jobs, and this page says so first: a personal notetaker such as Notey is not a replacement for Gong's team call analytics, deal forecasting or CRM sync. Gong is a revenue platform that records every customer conversation across a sales organisation, maps it to accounts and opportunities in the CRM, and uses it to coach reps and forecast. A personal notetaker records the calls one person takes and writes that person's notes.
People search for a Gong alternative for two different reasons. A sales leader comparing revenue platforms needs another platform, and this is the wrong page. A founder, consultant or single sales engineer who wants notes from their own calls, without a bot in the call and without buying a platform, may need only a notetaker. This guide is for the second group, and describes Gong from its own site and help centre as of September 2026. Check Gong's site for the current state.

What Gong is for
Gong describes itself as an "AI OS for Revenue Teams" that will "capture every interaction, analyze what's working, and automate what happens next." Its forecasting product turns "revenue signals into clear, AI-guided forecasts", and call insights "are mapped to the right accounts, opportunities, and contacts in your CRM". (Gong, Gong Forecast)
That value comes from volume: every rep's calls, in one place, compared with each other and with deal outcomes. A single person's calls do not give a platform like that much to work with.
How each one records
Gong records web meetings in two ways, per its help centre: "A virtual participant, responsible for recording the call, is added to the meeting", available for every conferencing integration; or, on Zoom only, "the provider's native recording functionality, with no additional participant added to the call." (Gong web conferencing integrations) On Teams, an admin allows Gong's bot domain. Gong supports Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, Microsoft Teams, GoTo Meeting, RingCentral and others.
Notey records your microphone and the sound your Mac plays as two separate tracks. Nothing joins the call and nothing is set up on the meeting platform. It notices calls in Zoom, Teams, Slack, FaceTime and supported browsers and asks before saving anything; for other apps you press Start. How meeting bots work covers what a bot participant changes.
Telling customers they are recorded
Gong has consent tooling built for teams, per its help centre: a consent page it hosts, an audio prompt when participants join, emails sent before the call, and Zoom's own recording disclaimer. For phone calls it says "you must verbally inform your customers." Admins can enforce the consent page. (Gong recording consent)
Notey is not in the call, so the other side sees nothing from it. You see a red dot and elapsed timer whenever audio is being kept, and saying that you are recording is up to you.
Where the data goes
Gong
- Calls are transcribed and stored in Gong's platform.
- Its trust page says customers can configure "how data is collected, accessed, and retained", with "custom retention and redaction settings, and bring-your-own-key encryption", and that "your data is never used to train generative models."
- It lists SOC 2 Type 2 and several ISO certifications. (Gong trust)
Notey
- Audio is recorded to your Mac and transcribed there with Apple's speech recognition. It is not uploaded to be transcribed.
- With no account, nothing leaves the Mac.
- AI notes send transcript text, never audio, to Notey's service and on to OpenAI as a processor; not used for training and not kept by Notey. (Notey's privacy policy)
- Notey claims no certifications.
What one person gets from each
For a single seller, the useful output of a call is usually the notes: what the customer said, what they need, who agreed to what, and the follow-up. Sales call notes covers what to capture.
Notey writes a summary with action items (it says so when nobody committed), minutes, tough questions, where the two sides differed, and a follow-up email. Ask Notey answers questions about one call. Every transcript line plays from its timestamp. The Notes tab shows Length, Words, Your words and Their words: a share of words, not of talking time. Talk-to-listen ratio explains why those are different measures.
Gong gives the same seller coaching, topic tracking, deal context and CRM updates, which only pay off inside a team using Gong.
Where Gong is the right choice
- You manage a sales team and want every rep's calls reviewed, scored and coached.
- You forecast from what is said on calls.
- You need calls mapped to CRM records automatically.
- You want a consent flow the tool enforces.
- You need calls in over 70 languages, which Gong's help centre lists.
- You need calls recorded when the rep is not there, or on phones and dialers.
Where a personal notetaker is enough
- You are one person, or a few people who do not need to see each other's calls.
- You want notes and a follow-up, not analytics.
- You do not want a bot in customer calls, and the audio should stay on your computer.
- You do not want to buy, administer or roll out a platform.
Notey is free to record, transcribe and search, with no account; AI notes are paid by the hour. See the pricing section. It runs only on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 26 or later, and has no integrations, team features or Windows version.
Which one fits
If the question is "which platform should our sales organisation use", compare Gong with other revenue platforms, not with a notetaker. If the question is "how do I get good notes from my own calls", a personal notetaker answers it, and the best AI notetakers for Mac lists the options.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Gong alternative for one person?
For notes, yes. A personal notetaker records your calls and writes summaries and action items. It does not replace Gong's team analytics, CRM mapping or forecasting, which only make sense across a sales team.
Does Gong use a bot?
Gong's help centre describes two ways to record web meetings. A virtual participant joins the meeting, on every supported platform. On Zoom, Gong can instead use Zoom's own cloud recording, with no extra participant.
Does Gong train AI on my calls?
Gong's trust page says your data is never used to train generative models. Check its current trust page for the details that apply to your contract.
Can Notey measure talk time like Gong?
Not talk time. Notey shows each side's share of the words spoken, not of the time, and leaves out lines your microphone picked up from your speakers. It has no coaching or scoring.
Can Notey put call notes into Salesforce?
No. Notey has no integrations. You export notes as Markdown and paste them into the CRM yourself.
