Recording meetings on a Mac

How to record a Dialpad meeting on a Mac

Dialpad records meetings and calls itself, with notices and AI transcripts. How that works on a Mac, and how to record a Dialpad call with Notey instead.

In short

Dialpad Meetings records and transcribes meetings with Dialpad Ai, and tells everyone with an audio and an on-screen notice. Dialpad calls are recorded with a Record button if your admin allows it. To keep audio and a transcript on your Mac, tell everyone, then press Start in Notey.

Dialpad records both of its kinds of conversation itself. Dialpad Meetings can record a meeting and transcribe it with Dialpad Ai, and everyone is told by an audio message and an on-screen notice. Dialpad calls are recorded when you press Record, or automatically, if your admin has turned recording on. If you want the audio and a transcript kept on your own Mac instead, tell everyone, then record with an app that captures your microphone and the Mac's audio, such as Notey. Notey does not notice the Dialpad apps, so you press Start.

Dialpad's rules were checked on its help centre on 25 September 2026. Check Dialpad's meeting recording help for the current state. For the same choice in Zoom, see how to record a Zoom meeting on a Mac.

These steps use Notey, which records your microphone and the Mac's audio as two separate tracks.

Record a Dialpad meeting or call on your Mac

  1. Tell everyone first. Say you would like to record and why, and record only if they agree. At work, check whether your company already records Dialpad calls.
  2. Check Notey's permissions. The first time, allow the microphone and recording the Mac's audio. Notey never asks for Screen Recording.
  3. Use headphones. On speakers, your microphone also hears the others.
  4. Join the meeting or place the call in the Dialpad Meetings app, the Dialpad app, or Dialpad in your browser.
  5. Start the recording in Notey. In the Dialpad apps, press Start. In Chrome, Safari, Arc or Edge, Notey's floating button asks once the browser uses your microphone; press Allow.
  6. Check both lanes move. You when you speak, Them when others do. A red dot and the elapsed time show while audio is kept.
  7. Press Stop when it ends. The transcript is ready; English conversations are improved on the Mac afterwards.

Dialpad's apps on a Mac

Per Dialpad's help centre, there is a Dialpad Meetings app for Mac and Windows, a main Dialpad desktop app for calls, a web app, and a Chrome extension. Meetings can also be joined from a browser. (Dialpad Meetings desktop app, Download Dialpad)

Dialpad's own recording

Meetings

  • "An audio notification is played at the beginning of every Dialpad Meeting if you toggle on recording and/or AI transcription."
  • "The Organizer and all Participants are alerted through an on-screen notification, as well as an audio message."
  • Free Dialpad Meetings accounts can record audio only. Automatic recording is a meeting setting.

Calls

  • Call recording is "available on all Dialpad plans, and our web, desktop, and mobile apps", but you or your admin must have enabled it; then you select Record. (Dialpad: record a call)
  • With office-wide automatic recording, "callers will not hear a call recording greeting", and agents need to tell callers the call is being recorded. (Dialpad: automatic call recording)
  • Dialpad Ai produces transcripts, summaries and action items. (Dialpad call recording)

At work, Dialpad's own recording, with its notices and your company's retention, is usually the expected one. A second recorder should be something your policy allows.

Why Notey does not notice Dialpad

Notey notices calls in Zoom, Teams, Slack and FaceTime, and in Chrome, Safari, Arc and Edge when the browser uses the microphone. The Dialpad apps are not on the list, so no prompt appears, and choices that depend on noticing a call, such as arming the next one, do not start a recording for them. Press Start. Dialpad in a supported browser is noticed as a browser call, named after the browser. Why your notetaker didn't notice a call starting explains how detection works, and recording a meeting that runs in the browser covers the browser case.

Telling people

Dialpad Meetings announces its own recording. A recorder on your Mac does not, because it is not part of the call, and Dialpad's automatic call recording does not announce itself either. Phone calls are where all-party consent rules are most common, so ask at the start. How to ask for consent to record has wording that works. This is general information, not legal advice.

If a side is missing from the recording

Most failed recordings of a Dialpad call fail in one of three ways, and each is quick to check before the next call:

  • Nothing on the Them lane. The call was not playing on this Mac, or Notey is not allowed to record the Mac's audio. Check the call's sound comes out of this Mac, and check the permission in System Settings › Privacy & Security. Allowing an app to record your Mac's audio shows where it is.
  • Nothing on the You lane. The microphone is muted at the system level, the wrong input is selected, or Notey is not allowed to use the microphone. Meeting recording silent or transcript empty goes through the checks.
  • A gap in the middle. Usually headphones connected or disconnected, or another microphone chosen, mid-call. Notey marks the meeting incomplete and says which side is missing and from when; it never fills the gap with silence. Why a recording is marked incomplete explains each reason.

If Dialpad is recording the same call, the two do not interfere. Dialpad's copy stays in your Dialpad account under your company's rules; Notey's stays on your Mac. Keep both only if you need both, and delete the one you do not.

What you get afterwards

  • A transcript made on your Mac, labelled You and Them; voices on the other side are told apart after the call, and you name them.
  • The recording on your Mac, every line playable from its timestamp.
  • AI notes if you ask, with an account and a paid plan: a summary with action items, a follow-up email and more. Only transcript text is sent, never audio, and everything the AI wrote is labelled.

With no account, nothing leaves the Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dialpad tell participants a meeting is recorded?

Yes. Dialpad's help centre says an audio notification plays at the start of a Dialpad Meeting when recording or AI transcription is on, and everyone sees an on-screen notification and hears an audio message.

Can I record Dialpad phone calls?

Dialpad's help centre says call recording is available on all Dialpad plans and apps, if you or your admin have enabled it; you select Record during the call.

Do callers hear a notice when Dialpad records automatically?

Not always. Dialpad's help centre says that when office-wide automatic call recording is on, callers do not hear a recording greeting, and agents need to tell callers the call is being recorded.

Does Notey notice Dialpad calls?

Not in the Dialpad apps, so press Start. If you use Dialpad in Chrome, Safari, Arc or Edge, Notey notices the call once the browser uses the microphone and asks before recording.
