In short

Discord has no call recorder, and its Clips feature is Windows-only. To record a Discord call on a Mac, ask everyone first, then use an app that records your microphone and the Mac's audio, such as Notey, and press Start. Discord says to get consent.

Discord has no built-in way to record a voice or video call on a Mac. To record one, you use an app on your Mac that records your microphone and the sound the Mac is playing, such as Notey, and you ask everyone in the call first. Discord's own guidance says that if you use third-party tools to record, you must follow the law, including getting consent from speakers.

This guide covers what Discord offers, the steps with Notey, how to get a usable recording, and the consent part. Discord's features and guidance were checked on its help centre on 25 September 2026. The general case, for any meeting app, is in how to record a Zoom meeting on a Mac.

These steps use Notey. Notey does not notice calls in the Discord app, so you start the recording yourself.

Record a Discord call on your Mac

  1. Ask first. Before the call, or as it starts, tell everyone you want to record and why. Record only if everyone agrees.
  2. Check Notey's permissions. The first time, macOS asks to let Notey use the microphone and record the Mac's audio. Both need to be allowed. Notey never asks for Screen Recording.
  3. Put on headphones. On speakers, your microphone picks up the other people too, and their words can end up on your side of the transcript.
  4. Join the Discord call. Use the Discord app, or Discord in a browser.
  5. Press Start in Notey. The red dot and the elapsed time appear in Notey's window, the menu bar and the floating button.
  6. Check both lanes move. When you speak, the You lane moves; when someone else does, the Them lane moves.
  7. Press Stop when the call ends. The transcript is already there. For an English call, Notey reads the recording again on the Mac afterwards and keeps the words its recognisers agree on.

If you use Discord in Chrome, Safari, Arc or Edge, Notey notices the call once the browser uses your microphone. The floating button says a call started in that browser and asks; nothing is saved until you press Allow.

What Discord offers

Discord's Stage Channel Guidelines say: "Discord does not currently provide a recording or transcript feature. If you choose to use third-party tools to record or transcribe your event, you must make sure that you are following relevant laws, including getting consent from speakers and audience members if needed." (Discord Stage Channel Guidelines)

Clips is not a call recorder. It saves the last 30 seconds to 2 minutes of a game you are streaming, on your own computer, and Discord's help centre says it is in early access for Nitro members and "only available for Windows. This feature is currently not supported on Mac". (Discord Clips)

So on a Mac, recording a Discord call means an app outside Discord.

A bot added to a server is visible to everyone, which makes consent more obvious, but it needs someone with permission to add it, and the audio goes to whoever runs the bot. A recorder on your Mac needs nothing from the server and keeps the audio on your disk. Recording your Mac's system audio compares the ways to capture what the Mac plays.

Get a usable recording

  • Headphones. The single biggest improvement. Without them, the other voices reach your microphone and the tracks blur.
  • Push to talk or noise suppression in Discord changes what the others hear, not what your microphone records. Notey records your microphone as macOS delivers it.
  • One device. If you join from your phone as well, the Mac hears nothing from that phone.
  • Test for ten seconds before an important call: speak, have someone reply, check both lanes moved.

In a busy voice channel with many people, the other side is one track. After the recording stops, Notey tells the voices on that side apart and you name them; people with similar voices, or who talk over each other, may be merged.

Ask before you record

Discord is where people talk casually, often with people they have never met and in other countries. Recording them without asking is a quick way to lose a community's trust, and in many places it is against the law.

  • Say it plainly: "I'd like to record this call so I can write up notes. Is everyone OK with that?"
  • Wait for each person. In a group, silence is not agreement.
  • Check the server's rules. Many servers ban recording without permission; moderators can remove people who break them.
  • Stop if someone says no, or leave them out of it.

Some places allow recording with one participant's consent; others require everyone's. In a call with people from several countries, the strictest rule is the safe one. How to ask for consent to record has wording for different situations. This is general information, not legal advice.

When Notey does not notice the call

Notey notices calls in Zoom, Teams, Slack, FaceTime, and in Chrome, Safari, Arc and Edge when the browser uses the microphone. The Discord app is not on that list, so the floating button stays quiet. That is expected: press Start, and the recording works the same as any other. Why your notetaker didn't notice a call starting explains how detection works.

What you get afterwards

  • A transcript made on your Mac, with your lines as You and the others as Them, and the other voices told apart after the call.
  • Search across every recording by what was said, with every line playable from its timestamp.
  • AI notes if you ask for them, with an account and a paid plan: a summary with action items, minutes and more. Only the transcript text is sent, never audio, and everything the AI wrote is labelled.

With no account, nothing leaves the Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Does Discord have a built-in recorder?

No. Discord's Stage Channel Guidelines say Discord does not currently provide a recording or transcript feature. Its Clips feature saves short game clips and, per Discord's help centre, is available only on Windows.

Will people in the Discord call know I am recording?

Not from Discord. A recorder on your Mac is not part of the call, so Discord shows nothing. That is why you ask at the start and record only if everyone agrees.

Does Notey notice Discord calls?

Not in the Discord app, so press Start yourself. If you use Discord in Chrome, Safari, Arc or Edge, Notey notices a call once the browser uses the microphone and asks whether to record.

Can I record a Discord call on a Mac without Screen Recording permission?

Yes, with a recorder that captures audio through Core Audio. Notey asks only for microphone and audio-recording permission and never for Screen Recording.

Discord calls are end-to-end encrypted. Does recording break that?

Encryption protects the call on its way between devices. Anything a participant records on their own computer is outside it, which is one more reason to ask before recording.
