Recording meetings on a Mac

How to record a GoTo Meeting on a Mac

GoTo Meeting's organisers and co-organisers record, locally or to the cloud. How that works on a Mac, and how an attendee can record with consent.

In short

In GoTo Meeting, organisers and co-organisers record, locally from the desktop app or to the cloud, and attendees see a notification. An attendee who needs notes should ask the organiser, or, with everyone's agreement, record the audio on their Mac with an app such as Notey.

In GoTo Meeting, the organiser and any co-organisers can record. They record either to their own computer, which needs the GoTo desktop app, or to the cloud, where the recording appears in the organiser's account, and everyone in the meeting sees a notification that it is being recorded. An attendee cannot use GoTo's recorder. If you are an attendee and need notes, ask the organiser to record or to make you a co-organiser; or, with everyone's agreement, record the meeting's audio on your Mac with an app such as Notey.

GoTo's rules were checked on its support site on 25 September 2026. Check GoTo's recording help for the current state. For the same question in Zoom, see how to record a Zoom meeting on a Mac.

These steps use Notey, which records your microphone and the Mac's audio as two separate tracks.

Record a GoTo Meeting on your Mac

  1. Ask first. Tell the organiser and the others you would like to record for your notes, and record only if they agree. If the organiser prefers to record with GoTo, use theirs.
  2. Check Notey's permissions. The first time, allow the microphone and recording the Mac's audio. Notey never asks for Screen Recording.
  3. Use headphones. On speakers, your microphone also hears the others.
  4. Join the meeting in the GoTo app or in your browser.
  5. Start recording in Notey. In the GoTo app, press Start; Notey does not notice GoTo calls. In Chrome, Safari, Arc or Edge, Notey's floating button asks once the browser uses your microphone; press Allow.
  6. Check both lanes move, You when you speak and Them when others do. A red dot and the elapsed time show while audio is kept.
  7. Press Stop when the meeting ends. The transcript is ready; English meetings are improved on the Mac afterwards.

GoTo Meeting's own recording

Per GoTo's support site:

  • Who: organisers and co-organisers can record the meeting. (GoTo: can a co-organiser record)
  • Which kind: the account admin decides whether each user records locally or to the cloud. (GoTo: change a user's recording method)
  • Local recording goes to a folder on the recorder's computer, by default Documents, as WEBM files. It needs the GoTo desktop app; cloud recording works from the web app too. (GoTo: desktop app and web)
  • Cloud recording is saved online in the organiser's account. A co-organiser's cloud recording shows up in the organiser's account; a co-organiser's local recording stays on their computer. (GoTo: manage recordings)
  • Notice: when recording starts, the record icon lights up and attendees see a notification that the meeting is being recorded.
  • Transcripts come from cloud recordings, when the admin has enabled both cloud recording and transcriptions, in English, Spanish, Italian and German. Organisers can generate AI summaries of recorded and transcribed sessions. (GoTo transcriptions)

The GoTo app for Mac needs macOS 12 or later.

Recording when you are not the organiser

Being unable to use GoTo's recorder is not a reason to record quietly. The organiser limited recording for a reason, or simply has not been asked. In order:

  1. Ask the organiser to record with GoTo and share it, or to make you a co-organiser.
  2. Ask whether you may record for your own notes. Most people agree when it is framed that way.
  3. If anyone objects, take notes by hand.

A recorder on your Mac does not ask GoTo, and GoTo shows nothing to others, which makes telling people your job. Recording a Zoom meeting without host permission covers the same situation in Zoom, including why "technically possible" and "allowed" are different questions. Whether you need everyone's consent depends on where you and they are; see how to ask for consent to record. This is general information, not legal advice.

Why Notey does not notice GoTo calls

Notey notices calls in Zoom, Teams, Slack and FaceTime, and in Chrome, Safari, Arc and Edge when the browser uses the microphone. The GoTo app is not on the list, so no prompt appears and you press Start. GoTo in a supported browser is noticed as a browser call, named after the browser. Why your notetaker didn't notice a call starting explains how detection works.

If a side is missing from the recording

Most failed recordings of a GoTo Meeting call fail in one of three ways, and each is quick to check before the next call:

  • Nothing on the Them lane. The call was not playing on this Mac, or Notey is not allowed to record the Mac's audio. Check the call's sound comes out of this Mac, and check the permission in System Settings › Privacy & Security. Allowing an app to record your Mac's audio shows where it is.
  • Nothing on the You lane. The microphone is muted at the system level, the wrong input is selected, or Notey is not allowed to use the microphone. Meeting recording silent or transcript empty goes through the checks.
  • A gap in the middle. Usually headphones connected or disconnected, or another microphone chosen, mid-call. Notey marks the meeting incomplete and says which side is missing and from when; it never fills the gap with silence. Why a recording is marked incomplete explains each reason.

If GoTo's own recording is also running, that is fine: the two do not interfere. You end up with GoTo's file in the organiser's account or on their computer, and Notey's recording and transcript on your Mac.

What you get afterwards

  • A transcript made on your Mac, labelled You and Them from the two tracks; voices on the other side are told apart after the meeting, and you name them.
  • The recording, on your Mac, every line playable.
  • AI notes if you ask, with an account and a paid plan: a summary with action items, minutes and more. Only transcript text is sent, never audio, and the AI's output is labelled.

With no account, nothing leaves the Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Who can record a GoTo Meeting?

Organisers and co-organisers, per GoTo's support site. The account admin decides which kind of recording, local or cloud, each user has.

Where does GoTo Meeting save local recordings on a Mac?

In a folder on the computer of the person who started the recording, by default Documents, as WEBM files named with the date, time and meeting name, per GoTo's support site. Local recording needs the GoTo desktop app.

Can I record a GoTo Meeting as an attendee?

Not with GoTo's recorder unless you are made a co-organiser. You can record the audio with an app on your Mac, which GoTo does not see, so ask everyone first and respect a no.

Does GoTo Meeting make transcripts?

Yes, from cloud recordings, if the admin turns on cloud recording and transcriptions. GoTo's support site lists English, Spanish, Italian and German, and organisers can generate AI summaries of recorded, transcribed sessions.
