Recording meetings on a Mac

How to record a Webex meeting on a Mac

Webex lets the host or a cohost record, locally or to the cloud, if the site allows it. How each works on a Mac, and how to record a Webex call with Notey.

In short

Webex has its own recorder, but only the host or a cohost can use it, and your Webex site's administrator decides whether local recording is allowed at all. If you can use it, you can record to your Mac or, on a paid account, to the cloud.

If you want a transcript on your own Mac instead, or you are a participant, you can record the meeting's audio with a separate app such as Notey — pressing Start yourself, because Notey does not detect Webex calls.

Webex's rules below are from its help centre as of September 2026: recording on your computer and recording in the cloud. Check them for your version.

Option 1: Record with Webex

Webex's help centre says that only the host or a cohost can record a meeting. If a cohost records, the host still receives and owns the recording. If the host is not in the meeting, a cohost assumes the host role and can record; when the host joins, they take that back. If there is no recording option in your meeting controls, you cannot record in that meeting.

Record to your Mac

Local recording is available to the host when the site administrator has allowed it. Webex says the recording includes participant audio, video and anything shared, and saves on a Mac to your Home folder by default, as an MP4 file you can open in Finder. It does not include a transcript.

Record to the cloud

On a paid Webex account, the host or a cohost can record to the cloud. When the recording is ready it saves to your Webex site; if the meeting is linked to a space, the link appears in that space. A transcript can be recorded as well, if it is set up.

Webex's help centre also states that before a meeting can be recorded, summarised or transcribed, everyone taking part needs to give their consent. That is a sensible rule for any recording method, including the next one.

Option 2: Record the call on your Mac with Notey

Notey is a Mac app that records your microphone and the sound your Mac is playing as two separate tracks and transcribes both on the Mac. It does not join the meeting and does not use Webex's recorder, so it records Webex the way it records anything else your Mac plays.

The one difference from Zoom or Teams: Notey does not notice Webex calls, so its floating button will not offer to record. You start it yourself.

Set it up once

  1. Download Notey and open it. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 26 or later. You do not need an account to record.
  2. Allow Microphone when macOS asks, and allow audio recording for what your Mac plays. Notey never asks for Screen Recording: it captures the Mac's audio through a Core Audio process tap, which does not need it.

Record a Webex meeting

  1. Join the Webex meeting.
  2. Tell the other participants you would like to record, and wait for their answer.
  3. In Notey, press Start, or click the floating button.
  4. While it records, a red dot and the elapsed time show in the Notey window, the menu bar and the floating button.
  5. When the meeting ends, press Stop. A recording you started by hand runs until you stop it.

If your Webex meetings are on a calendar, you can instead tick that calendar in Notey. It then records the meetings on it, shows the next one on Home with Turn off beside it, and announces each recording with Stop. A scheduled end stops nothing, so you still stop it yourself.

What you get

  • A transcript on your Mac, with your microphone as You and the meeting as Them. Several voices on the other side are told apart after the recording, and you name them.
  • The recording on your disk, every transcript line playable.
  • Live transcription in ten languages; after an English meeting, Notey reads the recording again on your Mac and keeps the words the recognisers agree on.
  • AI notes when you ask, with an account and a paid plan. Only transcript text is sent, never audio, and the AI's writing is labelled.

With no account, nothing leaves the Mac.

Why some calls are not detected

Notey notices calls in Zoom, Teams, Slack and FaceTime, and in Chrome, Safari, Arc and Edge when the browser uses the microphone. Other apps, Webex and Discord among them, and browsers such as Firefox, are recorded by pressing Start. Nothing about the recording is different once it starts. Why your notetaker didn't notice a call starting explains how detection works and what to do when it misses.

Get a usable recording

  • Headphones stop the other side from reaching your microphone and landing on your track. If it happens, move the line to the other side in Notey.
  • Check the microphone in Webex's audio settings and in System Settings › Sound › Input. They can disagree after you connect a headset.
  • Bluetooth microphones often force a lower-quality mode. Listen on the headset and speak into the Mac.
  • Remember to stop. The elapsed timer is the thing to glance at when you leave the meeting.

Tell people you are recording

Webex's own guidance asks for everyone's consent before recording, and that is the right habit whatever you use. Notey is not in the meeting and its indicator is visible only to you, so the only way the others know is if you tell them. How to ask for consent to record has wording for the start of a call and for the invite. The same choices for Zoom are in how to record a Zoom meeting on a Mac.

Which should you use?

  • You host and want a video file: Webex local recording, if your site allows it.
  • You host on a paid account and want a shareable recording with a transcript: Webex cloud recording.
  • You want notes and a transcript on your Mac, host or not, with everyone's agreement: press Start in Notey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I record a Webex meeting if I'm not the host?

With Webex's own recorder, only if you are the host or a cohost, according to Webex's help centre as of September 2026. If the host is absent, a cohost takes the host role and can record. A recorder on your own Mac does not depend on Webex roles, but you should still tell people and ask.

Where does Webex save local recordings on a Mac?

Webex's help centre says local recordings save to your Home folder by default, in MP4 format.

Does a Webex local recording include a transcript?

No. Webex says local recordings do not include transcripts. Cloud recordings on a paid account can include one if it is set up.

Does Notey notice Webex calls?

No. Notey notices calls in Zoom, Teams, Slack, FaceTime and supported browsers, but not the Webex app. Press Start in Notey when the meeting begins; it records Webex like anything else your Mac plays.
